R&D of Sustainalube AB
The R&D team at Sustainalube includes world-leading scientists in the fields of tribology and lubrication. The company’s founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) is Professor Yijun Shi, who has over 20 years of experience in tribology.
Since 2015, Sustainalube AB has conducted several research projects focused on glycerol-based lubricants. These projects have been supported by organizations such as Mistra Innovation, the Kempe Foundation, Vinnova, Formas, Energimyndigheten, and EIT RawMaterials. As of 2024, research grants awarded to Sustainalube are approximately 40 million SEK. All projects have been carried out in close collaboration with Luleå University of Technology.
Through this partnership, Sustainalube has access to state-of-the-art tribology testing and analysis equipment, including Micro-Pitting Rig (MPR), Mini Traction Machine (MTM), SRV®5 Tribometer, Anton Paar Rheometer, Zygo 3D profilometer, and scanning electron microscope (SEM), among others. This advanced equipment significantly enhances the quality and efficiency of Sustainalube’s R&D and enables the company to compete at the same level as well-established players in the lubricant industry.
In recent years, Sustainalube has also built strong partnerships with major companies across various industries, including hydropower, forestry, and manufacturing. These collaborations have provided valuable market insights and help guide the company’s research and development towards clear, industry-driven goals.
